Celebrated American-born writer (1843–1916) who spent much of his literary career in England and who remains best known for his novels exploring Victorian manners and morals, including such classics as Washington Square, The Wings of the Dove, and The Golden Bowl. ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, June 25, 1887. Letter to Miss Hanbury Tracy. In part: “I find it difficult to refuse any request you make of me—but I must ask you ‘to let me off’ at least for the present. My engagements at present are so very, very numerous that I find the greatest difficulty in fulfilling them…Will you therefore carry to the members of the G.F.D.S [Society for German Language] my gratitude for the great compliment they have paid me.” In fine condition, with a bit of light soiling, and small pencil notations to top of first page.
