Official Reach Special League red and blue stitched baseball, signed in fountain pen on the sweet spot (circa 1929–1932) “Babe Ruth,” and on an adjoining side panel “Lou Gehrig,” with a signature of Lyn Lary under Gehrig’s. According to the consignor, the baseball was owned by Walter Penne, an oil executive from San Antonio, Texas, who work frequently took him to the East Coast. He had a younger brother Leroy, who was offered a chance to catch in the majors, but declined in order to help on the family farm. Walter Penne obtained the signatures on this ball and presented it as a gift to his younger brother. Leroy and his parents farmed near Cresco, Iowa, but later moved to Marion, Iowa, with this ball remaining in the Penne family until 2009. In very good condition, with a small blue ink touch-up to the “ab” of Ruth’s signature, light toning and expected aging, minor flaking of ink to both signatures (both remaining completely legible). Undoubtedly the most sought-after double-signed combination in baseball! JSA/Mike Gutierrez Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
