“THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE IS REGISTERING”: REAGAN writes to psychic JEANE DIXON in the midst of his unsuccessful 1976 campaign for the GOP nomination

TLS signed “Ron,” one page, 7 x 10.25, personal letterhead, July 14, 1976. Reagan writes to the well-known celebrity psychic Jeane Dixon. In full: “This is no more than a hasty line to say thanks for your kind and generous letter. It’s hardly a fair trade but I’m literally between planes all the time these days. As we come down to the wire, it will be a handful of ‘uncommitted delegates’ who decide the outcome. You are right about the surrogates and the powers employed by the incumbent but, so far, the voice of the people is registering. Whether it will prevail remains to be seen. Again, thanks. Nancy sends her best and give our regards to Jimmy.” Though unsuccessful in his upstart attempt to wrest the 1976 GOP presidential nomination from the incumbent, Gerald Ford, the visibility Ronald Reagan attained helped set the stage for his successful run four years later. The association with Jeane Dixon is particularly significant in light of the embarrassing bombshell revelation more than a decade later by Michael Deaver, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff, that the Reagans regularly sought the advice of psychics during Reagan’s presidency. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine condition. RRAuction COA.
