Description

“PLEASE HEAVEN SEND MY SOLDIER BACK”: “Mountainboy” GRETA GARBO writes to lover GILBERT ROLAND

Partial ALS in Garbo’s hand, signed in the text “m-boy” and “mountainboy,” one page both sides, 6.25 x 10.25, no date [envelope postmarked September 7, 1943]. Garbo, then very recently retired, writes to actor Gilbert Roland, whom biographers have recently confirmed was involved in a love affair with the actress in the summer of 1943. In part: “[…] And perhaps you wouldn’t believe me and only salute me, and go and have corn flakes alone. Please tell me how ‘fond’ you are of the m-boy often, all the time, he loves to be loved, and he never asked anyone that before…. I think you and I should meet and talk it over. Let us meet soon, very soon. You are the only one I could talk to about it. Come, come. Please heaven send my soldier back…. Poor little one, perhaps I should not write you like this. It is Sunday and 11:30 at night and very late for the mountainboy. He goes to bed early. He could never be married because he goes to bed so early. And he raises the devil if he has to stay up. So you see he is really truly a very difficult being. He has made my live very miserable at times. Good night sweet soldier. Bless you….” Garbo, who rarely signed her full name, adopted “mountainboy” as a nickname among her intimates in reference to the masculine side of her personality. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Garbo’s distinctive printed hand. Mild handling wear with a few creases, otherwise fine condition. One of the supreme rarities among Hollywood personalities! RRAuction COA.
