“To punish the Indians for their treacherous Insurrections”

British general (1719–1878) who was commander in chief of the North American forces from 1763 to 1775. ALS signed “Thos. Gage,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 12, September 25, 1763. Gage writes from Montreal to Captain Simpson of the 35th Regiment. In part: “After many & various Reports of the Destination of your Regt., we at last hear it is fixed at St. Augustine…. The 80th is gone to Detroit to assist Major Gladwin to punish the Indians for their treacherous Insurrections this last spring; which no Doubt you will be well informed of. It’s said they are to be broke there, & the men Draughted to compleat the first Battn. of the Americans & the 56th Regt. Part of the 55th are gone to Fort Wm. Augustus under Capt. Dunbar… I have long expected my Dismission from this Government & order to repair to England. And in order to be ready for my Journey, Mrs. Gage & her little family went to the Jerseys in March last, where I expected to follow her…. But here I still am….” Gage goes on to send other news of mutual acquaintances. Accompanied by the address wrapper. In good condition, with intersecting folds (touching signature), wrinkling, and water staining (touching text but not affecting legibility). RRAuction COA.
