Description

Upcoming roles in Don Carlos and Norma

Revered Greek opera singer (1923–1977) widely regarded as the greatest soprano of all time. TLS in Italian, signed “Maria Meneghini Callas,” one page, 8.25 x 11, September 11, 1950. Callas writes from Verona to Guido Sampaoli, director of the Opera Theatre in Rome. In part (translated): “I heard that you had been named Director of the Rome Opera. What wonderful news, I said to myself, remembering our cordiality as well as the sincerity that had always inspired our relationship…. I responded to your telegram of the 8th right away, accepting the four performances of Don Carlos you offered me. let us determine the exact terms directly between you and me as we did last year, too. I have been careful and reluctant so far about taking on engagements because I wanted to know the intentions of Maestro Serafin to whom I have written repeatedly without getting a response, and follow his requests and directives, hoping fervently, above, all, to be able to do Traviata with him, thus obviating the regrettable incidents of last year after which, as you probably know, I had to turn down Cagliari with Maestro Serafin because I had to do Catiana on the strength of a contract that had been in place for months. Therefore, in short, I have only decided on Naples with Don Carlos in mid-December and Palermo with Norma form February 6 to 18….” Accompanied by two TLS from Sampaoli to Callas, dated March 23 and May 12, 1952. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds (touching first letter of signature), wrinkling, and handling wear with a few staple holes. RRAuction COA.
