George IV (1762–1830) was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1820 to his death. The eldest son of George III, he alienated his subjects with his prodigious spending and contemptuous treatment of his wife Queen Caroline, whom he refused to admit to his coronation. ALS signed “G. R.,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 8.75, September 6, 1827. George writes to Sir William Knighton, heading the letter “most private.” In part: “The King desires that Sir Charles Bagot will lend his best assistance to an affair which … has proved not only inconvenient but highly disgusting to the King’s feelings….” The king then asks that the letter be kept confidential.
