Unsigned document written in Adams’s hand, one page, 8 x 10, no date [circa late 1830s–1840.] A report, evidently made as part of Adams’s post-presidential duties in the House of Representatives, related to the importation of silk. In part: “The Committee of manufacturers to whom have been referred many memorials numerously signed, suggesting that the assessment of such reasonable duties on the important of silks in all their forms as would enable the Government to collect a fair proportion of its revenue from that source, would at the same time secure to our citizens that moderate but reasonable encouragement in the culture and manufacture of silk which in the opinion of the memorialists, is alone requisite to lay the foundation, and sustain the growth of a new and highly important interest equally beneficial to every section of the country, and alike conducive to individual and national prosperity have instructed their chairman to report a Bill to that effect….” The bottom margin bears an early collector’s note and, below that, a 1954 ink statement of authenticity signed “Harley Brown Cooper.” Accompanied by an antique portrait engraving. In very good to fine condition, with light soiling, wrinkling, and handling wear, a few minor marginal chips, notations as noted, and light show-through from mounting remnants to reverse.
