Description

“I beg you to accept of ye New Volume of my things just printed”: POPE sends a copy of one his final books

Brilliant, highly influential British poet (1688–1744) best known for his satire Rape of the Lock and his editions of Homer and Shakespeare. Scarce ALS signed “A. Pope,” one page, 6 x 6, dated in another hand May 6, 1735. Pope writes to Mr. Duncombe. In full: “Many thanks for your kind present, in w[hi]ch I find several very pleasing & very correct pieces of his (Mr. Hughes) which were new to me. I beg you to accept of ye New Volume of my things just printed, which will be deliver’d you by Mr. Dodsley, the author of ye Toyshop, who has just set up a Bookseller, & I doubt not, as he has more sense, so will have more honesty, than most of that professions….” The “New Volume” which Pope mentions was evidently The Prologue to the Satires, issued in the same year. Trimming as noted, and mild scattered staining and handling wear, otherwise fine, bright condition. RRAuction COA.
