Self-educated African-American botanist (circa 1864–1943) who became a leading expert in agricultural science, most notably relating to the cultivation and practical uses of the peanut. ALS signed “Geo. W. Carver,” one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead, December 11, 1931. Carver writes to “My dear boy, Mr. [Ralph] Douherty.” In part: “Yes, dear, Christmas is right here. You are right, we are not thankful enough, many of us are simply a bundle of complaints. I am quite sure your mother gets great satisfaction out of her garden, to pick roses up to Christmas is something to be proud of. The thing that I rejoice in most, is that my dear, handsome boy has the fundimental [sic] principals [sic] of happiness and success. The ‘Golden Rule’ if lived will settle all of our difficulties…. We would have no use for jails and other penal institutions…. I certainly want my dear boys, ‘Ralph’ and ‘Billy’ to come as a Christmas gift. This is all I want from you.
