“In a highly publicized case the politicians like the public exposure”: BÜLOW reflects on the events that made him a household name

Controversial British socialite (born 1926) who achived worldwide notoriety when he was accused of attempting to murder his wealthy wife, Sunny von Bülow, with an insulin injection that left her in a coma for nearly 28 years until her death in 2008. The highly publicized furor surrounding Bülow and the attendant legal cases was the subject of the acclaimed 1990 film Reversal of Fortune, for which Jeremy Irons won the Academy Award for his portray of Bülow. TLS signed “Claus Bülow,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, October 25, 1985. Bülow responds to an individual interested in his case. In part: “There is nothing wrong with the system as such. The reason I was convicted the first time was that the defence did not then have the vital scientific and medical evidence to show that there was no injection of insulin, and therefor [sic] no crime at all…. I was well treated by the authorities. However I think there is a danger in the American system of politically motivated prosecutors…. The media are of course mainly concerned with the kind of ‘news’ the public wants. That means they want scandal and adultery, and do not cover complex, esoteric, but vital medical evidence. However I am sure that I was in a way lucky to be a media event because it meant that I could not be buried unnoticed and unlamented after the first trial….” Wrinkling and creasing to top margin, otherwise fine condition.
