Description

Withdrawing a job application as a 27-year-old doctor

Pioneering and highly influential founder of psychoanalysis (1856–1939) whose theories revolutionized the understanding the human psyche. Scarce early ALS in German, signed “Dr. Sigm. Freud,” one page, 8.25 x 13.5, April 3, 1884. Freud writes to the Allgemeinen Krankenhauses [General Hospital]. In part (translated): “Due to the conditions that arose while I applied for the job as secondary doctor … at the third medical section I am forced to withdraw my application.” In the same month as he penned this letter, Freud began “experimenting” with cocaine and went on to publish several articles on its physiological and psychological effects. In fine condition, with subtle toning primarily confined to the perimeter, central vertical fold (short edge separation in blank bottom portion), and a touch of edge wear. The text is bold, dark, and fully legible, and the entire letter is of quite appealing appearance. Letters of Freud from this earliest stage of his medical career, as well as those with this form of Freud’s signature, are of the utmost scarcity and interest.
