Revolutionary War general, first Secretary of War, and founder of the military school that became West Point (1750–1806). LS signed “H. Knox,” one page trimmed in size to 7.25 x 8.75, July 30, 1791. Knox writes to Quartermaster General L. Hodgson. In part: “The bearer Mr. Charles Avery formerly of Norwich, but now of the New Jersey, is desirous of serving in some of the branches of your department. I cannot employ him at this distance, nor do I know that you can. But if you should want such a person as he is, for the public service you will of course engage him….” Trimming as noted, intersecting folds, mild wrinkling, and a few light stains, otherwise fine condition.
