Description

Inscribed with an original sketch

Eminent American artist and illustrator (1864–1926) best known for his evocative images of the people and landscapes of the American West. Signed book: Rawhide Rawlins Stories. Third printing. Great Falls, Montana: Montana Newspaper Association, 1921. Softcover, 7.5 x 11, 60 pages. Signed and inscribed on the title page, “To Miss Josephine Trigg from C. M. Russell 1921,” Russell adding a small sketch of a steer skull. The recipient was a member of the Trigg family, neighbors and close friends of Russell whose collection of works later formed the basis for the museum devoted to the artist in Great Falls, Montana. Josephine, the Triggs’ daughter, was particularly close to Russell; in his biography of the artist, Brian Dippie notes that “Albert Trigg’s death in 1917 did not alter the Triggs’ relationship with Josephine Trigg; in fact, the passing of time only bound them closer together…. Austin Russell believed that Charlie would have married her in a minute if Nancy had died; though there may have been a touch of jealousy on Nancy’s part.” Housed in a custom cloth slipcase. A touch of mild wear, a few light bends, and discreet expert restoration to covers, otherwise clean, fine condition. A most notable association for this important Western artist.
