Description

Handwritten music with original portrait sketches

Saxophonist, band leader, and composer (1926–1967) whose brilliant improvisatory skills and experimental spirit made him one of the most influential and highly regarded musicians in the history of jazz. After playing tenor and soprano sax with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk, he led his own groups and made such classic recordings as “Giant Steps,” “My Favorite Things,” and “A Love Supreme.” He died of liver cancer at the age of 41. Unsigned music manuscript in pencil on both sides of a 9.5 x 6.25 sheet of preprinted staff paper, approximately 36 one-stave measures in various time signatures, one side bearing the notations “Major Scale = 2 major tetrachords, to trachord [sic] = 2 while, 1 1/2 steps,” as well as various doodles and small sketches of heads. The sheet bears the Coltrane estate’s “2005 Jowcol Music” copyright ink stamp. Light soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition. JSA/Roger Epperson (REAL) Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
