Description

Henry Wells and William Fargo

Businessmen Henry Wells (1805–1878) and William Fargo (1818–1881) founded the American Express Company in 1850 and the Wells Fargo Company in 1851. By capitalizing on the burgeoning need for express and banking services, both men (and their companies) came to number among the greatest success stories in the commercial development of the American west—and, indeed, became still-familiar household words. Partly printed DS, one page both sides, 11.5 x 8, May 15, 1863. A handsomely engraved certificate for eight shares of capital stock in the American Express Company, issued to R. L. Johnson of Albany, signed “Henry Wells” as President and “Wm. G. Fargo” as Secretary. Matted and framed to an overall size of 15.25 x 12.25. Light scattered soiling, toning, and rippling, and faint show-through from notations on reverse, otherwise fine condition. The signatures are clear and dark. RRAuction COA.
