Lady Diana Frances Spencer (1961–1997) was 20 when she married Prince Charles, future king of England, on July 29, 1981. While her youth and beauty made her a favorite of the public and the paparazzi, her personal life provided an endless supply of fodder for the tabloids. After the birth of two sons, Princes William and Harry, Diana and Charles finally divorced in 1996. Diana devoted her post-royal life to her sons and worldwide charities. She and her boyfriend, department-store heir and sometime movie producer Dodi Fayed, were killed in a car crash in Paris while on the run from paparazzi. Superb silver gelatin 5.5 x 7 photo of a smiling Diana in a casual pose, signed in black ink in the lower border, “With love from Diana.” The image was one of more than 2,500 shots taken by famed photographer Mario Testino during the three-day photo shoot for Vanity Fair magazine in March 1997, just five months before Diana’s death. Presented in its original textured black frame with domed top and gilt-embossed “D” monogram with crown, which is in turn protectively matted and framed to an overall size of 11 x 14. Just a hint of silvering around the outline of Diana’s image, otherwise very fine condition. A lovely remembrance of one of the most beloved figures of the 20th century!
