American character actress (1880–1962). In 1939, after a well-regarded stage career and a string of small, often uncredited movie parts, Blandick landed her most memorable role—Auntie Em in MGM’s The Wizard of Oz. After Oz, Blandick returned to supporting and bit roles and committed suicide by suffocation at the age of 81. Ink signature, “Clara Blandick,” on the reverse of a 3.5 x 5.5 picture postcard featuring the Hollywood Canteen. The postcard is dated in another hand June 2, 1943, and has also been signed by several others, including Charles Middleton (pencil), Bill Lundigan, Florence Bates, Charles Butterworth, and Fay Holden.
