Description

On royal lineage and his entry in Burke’s Peerage: “Queen Victoria had said that she and her children were being kept in the succession in their due place”

British admiral and statesman (born 1900), uncle of Prince Philip, and Supreme Allied Commander in Southeast Asia during World War II, who was killed by an IRA bomb in 1979. TLS, one page, 8 x 11.5, Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean letterhead, February 23, 1953. Mountbatten writes to Mr. Townsend, handwriting the salutation. In part: “Thank you for your letter ... sending me the proof of the Editor’s Preface to the new ‘Burke’s Peerage.’ I am grateful for the special mention of the additions to my lineage, but what I really meant was that a reference in my own biographical section should appear to the fact that my lineage appears on quite another page, in fact under Milford Haven.... I was interested to note that the names of fifty or sixty persons who are in succession to the crown are being given in the new edition. My mother always told me that Queen Victoria had said that she and her children were being kept in the succession in their due place and that she had confirmed it from King Edward VII, King George V and latterly King George VI in personal conversation.... I have had a letter from Prince Louis of Hesse with a considerable number of comments on the family lineage....” In fine condition. RRAuction COA.
