Description

“BUT ALWAYS A WRITER”: On the verge of breakout success, L’AMOUR courts a female admirer: “I ... would like to spend hours making love to you”

Prolific American author of westerns (1908–1988) , including such classics as Hondo and How the West Was Won. TLS signed in black crayon “Lou,” one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, February 8, 1953. L’Amour writes to Evie Landsberg, a young journalist. In part: “What I want most is to see you … as you are undoubtedly aware. It would be nice, I think, to buy you a drink, a dinner, or even to drink coffee with you. If I had a car, and I do not, I would drive at once to Alhambra and appear accidentally, at your door. I would, of course, have to brush aside a flock of ambitious guys, but I could do it, and I would … in fact, I might even enjoy it. It isn’t often, you see, that I find anyone so lovely in my audiences. It was a shock and a surprise, and I only wish I could have more of them, but you would not wish to hear me again, even though I do talk about many things, other than writing. But most of all, I should like to talk just to you … I can’t give you any atmosphere so romantic as some of that in Rio, but I have a feeling that any place where we were would be romantic…. Maybe you want some vital statistics…. I’m a very dull person, unfortunately. As I’ve said, I don’t have a car. I don’t dance, either. I like going out for dinner, drink very little (never too much) like Bourbon and soda for a social drink, wine for taste. I usually keep some good wines around, I know wines very well…. I’ve read almost everything, have travelled almost everywhere but most of it the hard way. I have almost no formal education, leaving school at fifteen and never returning. I have, however, lectured in 37 universities and colleges…. I write a great variety of stories. I have written poetry (published a book of it once, mostly very bad, some fairly good, all of it needing more work) and have written a variety of stories, not all of a commercial type. I am not married and have never been, but always liked the idea and always intended to, but somehow it never happened. I like music of all kinds…. I like the theatre, first nights usually find me in the crowd, like the movies, like walking, like ballet, like window-shopping, like to read … and would like to spend hours making love to you…. I’ve travelled in most of the world’s countries, and have been a seaman, miner, tourist guide, editor, soldier, explorer (of sorts), a prizefighter (briefly and with some success) and a few other things. but always a writer….” Accompanied by an unsigned photo presented by L’Amour to the original recipient, as well as a detailed letter of provenance. In good condition, with intersecting mailing folds, allover heavy wrinkling, and a few scattered stains and small tears. RRAuction COA.
