Letter to Colonel John Tayloe, one of the richest planters in Virginia, and the owner of the Octagon House in Washington which served temporarily as the Executive Mansion after the burning of the White House by the British. In part: “It is my intention to return to the city in a few days, which will be…before your departure. Should you however, have set out, on your journey to the Eastward, before I come down, I have to request that you will confer with the Secretary of the Treasury on the subject, of yours to me, by whom you will be informed of the result.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, light block of toning and some small stains along top edge, and light show-through from docketing on reverse.
