DS, signed “P. Henry,” one page, 15 x 19, June 1, 1785. Henry, as Governor of Virginia, signs a land grant for eight hundred acres in the County of Fayette [now Kentucky] to Richard Spur. In 1772, Fincastle County became the frontier county of Virginia, which included all of what is now Kentucky and part of Southwestern Virginia. In 1776, the Commonwealth of Virginia dissolved Fincastle County and a portion of it became Kentucky County. Four years later, Kentucky County was subdivided into three counties: Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln. Fayette County included what is now the State of Kentucky east and north of the Kentucky River and its Middle Fork. On May 1, 1785, one month before issuance of this land grant, Fayette County was divided into two counties, the northern portion being called Bourbon, and the southern portion retaining the name of Fayette. In good to very good condition, with professional repairs and reinforcement to intersecting storage folds on reverse, several small areas of paper loss along folds, mild overall toning, and light mirroring of handwritten text.
