Description

Antonio Scarpa

Italian anatomist (1752–1832) who wrote several important treatises on a wide range of anatomical and medical subjects. Scarce ALS in Italian, signed “Ant. Scarpa,” one page, 7 x 9.75, August 4, 1787. Scarpa writes to Leiden anatomist Eduard Sandifort (1742–1814) regarding the second volume of his “Anatomicarum annotationum,” which he cannot send yet due to “commercii dificultas,” and his treatise “De structura fenestrae rotundae auris et de tympano secundario anatomicae observationes,” which he would be happy to see included in Sandifort’s Thesaurus. The treatise, a “juvenile opusculum” written at the age of 18, had made its author instantly famous. Scarpa continues to discuss his English colleague John Hunter (1728–93), who, in his recent “Observ[ations] on certain parts of the animal oeconomy” claimed to be the discoverer of the “communicationis inter aerem Tubae Eustachianae et cellulas cranii,” while in fact he, Scarpa, discovered and described this tube two years before Hunter; he notes that, however, English scholars frequently fail to take notice of foreign literature. The adjacent leaf bears the address panel in Scarpa’s hand. Intersecting folds and a hint of very subtle soiling, otherwise fine, bright condition. RRAuction COA.
