Description

Otto Hahn

German chemist (1879–1968) who won the 1944 Nobel Prize for the discovery of nuclear fission. ALS (in pencil) in German, signed “Otto,” on a 3.5 x 5.5 government postcard, May 6, 1915. Hahn writes from the Eastern front to his wife, Edith. In part (translated): “Here in Bolinov since yesterday; this morning I was once again close to the real war, the first time for a long while, in the trenches of the 17th army corps; everyone from West Prussia etc. The trenches are very fine, at a least right now the war here is not to be compared with the business in the West. You feel just like during peace. The enemy is up to 1000 meters away, only in a very few places is he as close as at the most distant positions at Ypres. We’ll have a shelter built again, but actually are living quite comfortably here in Bolinov with a sapper corps…. Of course, the region is not nearly as charming as Galicia…. It reminds you of the sandiest places … but without the charm. I don’t think I’ve caught any lice yet, but you never know what the future may have in store….” Mild soiling (a few small, faint stains), otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
