Description

Speaking on the McKinley Tariff Act: “Massachusetts has well enough rebuked the rash & headstong extremists of the Republican Party.”

Maine-born Union major general (1828–1914) who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his defense of Little Round Top at Gettysburg. He later served as Governor of Maine and president of Bowdoin College. ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, November 11, 1890. Letter to Mr. Putnam. In part, “Your favor asking me to speak on the Tariff question in Mr. Hoar’s canvass only came to me here yesterday. Could I consistently have done so I would cheerfully have taken part in the discussions, but it was next to impossible for me to break out…enveloped as I am in cases & responsibilities of business…However, Massachusetts has well enough rebuked the rash & headstong extremists of the Republican Party.” The McKinley Tariff Act of 1890, which placed a high tax on imported items, required all foreign imports to be marked with the country of origin. Republican Massachusetts Senator Hoar favored the act. In fine condition, with vertical mailing fold through a single letter of signature. RRAuction COA.
