Description

Andrew Johnson

DS as president, one page, 15.75 x 20, June 1, 1865. President Johnson appoints George Burroughs to the position of “Captain in the Corps of Engineers.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Johnson, and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Accompanied by three other documents from Burrough’s career: his degree from West Point in 1862; his 1866 marriage license to Cassie Bryson; and his 1862 Dialectic Society membership from the United States Military Academy. Burrough’s graduated third in his class at West Point and entered the Engineer Corps. He graduated in 1861 just in time to go into the Civil War. He was at Chattanooga and Nashville. At the former he seized a saber and rushed into the fight. He built the break-water at Provincetown and had his first independent command as inspector of a lighthouse district. The former General U. S. Grant once reportedly said many years ago that he was the brightest young man in the Army. In fine condition, with previous horizontal storage folds, and just a bit of scattered light toning and soiling. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
