Description

Scarce presidential ALS seeking a favor for “an old school friend”

Two items: 1) ALS as president, signed “WGH,” one page, 5 x 8, White House letterhead, no date [February 1922]. Harding writes to General [Harry M.] Daugherty, his Attorney General. In full: “The bearer is I. H. Miller, an old school friend of Caledonia, now a resident of California. I talked to you concerning him over the phone. I would be glad to have him made Warden of the penitentiary at McNeil’s Island.” 2) TLS as president, a follow-up of the previous letter, signed “Warren G. Harding,” one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, February 24, 1922. Harding writes again to Daugherty. In full: “I have yours of February 23rd making inquiry concerning the nomination of the Penitentiary Warden at McNeill’s Island. I think perhaps we had better give the appointment to the candidate proposed by Senator Poindexter. I will be glad to have you tender the Deputy Wardenship to Mr. Miller. I do not know of a better solution….” Daugherty (1860–1941), who served as Attorney General 1921–24, resigned his post in connection with one of the many scandals that plagued the Harding administration, though Daugherty was ultimately cleared of any charges following a Senate investigation. In fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
