Rennie writes to Major General B— regarding a canal whose construction was intended as a means to prevent a French invasion at the coast. In part: “In consequence of the orders I yesterday received from his Royal Highness the Commander in Chief I sent one of my assistants to examine the number & dimensions of the different outlet sluices or tunnels in the levels of Westham & Plaistow &c, lying between the River Lea & Backing Creek, & He reported to me this day, that there are Eight outlets in the above levels of which the following is a list…. The above eight sluices would be attended with a very inconsiderable expense & might be useful in case an Enemy were to advance to[o] near to London….” Intersecting folds, light wrinkling, and slight show-through, otherwise fine condition.
