Description

Health woes in prison: “There is some disease within me that is showing up in the form of pain in my hand”

LS signed “Bapu’s blessings,” one page both sides, 4.25 x 7, September 1932. Gandhi writes to his friend Dr. Behram Navroji Khambatta. In part (translated): “The pain in my elbow has returned, so to rest it as much as possible, I have my letters written by someone. The ‘blue brom’ letter didn’t scare us. I had no idea what ‘blue brom’ was, but when you letter reached me, I was lying under a tree and commented I don’t know about ‘blue brom’ but staying under the tree it could be ‘green brom!’ We all joked because I didn’t have a single symptom…. I realize how you became aware of it, and that gives me further amusement. It is unlikely that I wouldn’t allow Mehtathai to examine me physically…. But the thing is that I would need special permission for him to examine me and I am afraid it will be denied. Requesting permission and not getting it would cause unpleasantness…. Like him, I also believe that no matter how much self control I exercise, there is some disease within me that is showing up in the form of pain in my hand, or some other way. My intestines are definitely weak….” The top of the first page bears the ink stamp of “Superintendent, Yeravada Central Prison, Poona,” where Gandhi had been imprisoned earlier in the year for civil disobedience on behalf of Indian rights. Intersecting folds and light uniform toning, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
