TLS signed “RN,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, March 23, 1987. Nixon writes to the legendary Hollywood superagent Irving “Swifty” Lazar. In full: “While Mrs. Nixon and I will not be able to attend your Academy Awards night celebration, we want to extend our best wishes for what we know will be a memorable evening. For years your reception has been a major highlight of Academy Awards night….” Nixon has also added the handwritten salutation “Dear Swifty.” Lazar (1907–1993), dubbed “Swifty” by his client Humphrey Bogart, represented a stable of heavyweights ranging from Ernest Hemingway and Vladimir Nabokov to Sharon Stone and Madonna. Lazar was instrumental in brokering the $600,000 deal for the famous 1977 television interview of Richard Nixon by David Frost, the subject of the 2008 film Frost/Nixon, in which Lazar is portrayed by British actor Toby Jones (who, in a previous film, played Truman Capote, another of Lazar’s clients). Lazar is perhaps best remembered by the world at large for his post-Academy Award parties, which became a must-attend event among the Hollywood elite. In fine condition. A most notable association! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
