German World War I military hero (1847–1934) and president of Germany from 1925 to 1934. ALS in German, signed “Paul Hindenburg,” on a 5.5 x 3.75 government postcard, October 27, 1914. A month after the Battle at Tannenberg which made him a hero, Hindenburg writes to his nephew a lieutenant at Verdun, congratulating him on winning the Iron Cross, mentioning his own victory at Tannenberg, expresses his gratitude “for God’s help in being so successful,” and adding that “it was peculiar to be in a serious, heavy battle so close to home.” Removably presented on a collector’s sheet with images and historical information, including a vintage postage stamp and postcard.
