Description

Writing a letter of recommendation to a Virginia congressman

ALS as president, one page, 7.5 x 9.25, November 21, 1821. Monroe writes from Washington to Congressman Charles Fenton Mercer in Aldie [Virginia]. In part: “Mr. Rutherford, formerly a Senator of the U. States from Jersey, & with whom I had the pleasure to serve, & for whom I have great respect, & esteem, will present to you this letter. He has an interest at Sniggers Gap, beyond the mountain in some land which I understand belonged to your uncle Colonel George Mercer, now in the occupancy of a Mr. Castleman, which forms the motive of his visit thither, at this time. It occurred to me that you might be able to give him useful information on that subject…. I hope that you have recover’d your health, & that you will avail yourself of the present favorable season to place yourself on the ground, on which your duty will confine you for the winter….” Mercer, together with Monroe, was instrumental in forming the plan that led to the establishment of the Free State of Liberia by ex-American slaves. Matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 19.75 x 17. In very good condition, with light intersecting folds, mild handling wear, and scattered small stains (lightly touching signature). The writing is clear and dark throughout. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA
