Description

ABOVE PAR: RUTH signs a golf scorecard

Unmarked golf scorecard from the Briar Hills Golf Club (now known as Trump International), 6 x 4.25, signed in pencil on the scorer’s line, “Babe Ruth.” One of Ruth’s passions was golf, and he often played 36 holes a day, especially during spring training in St. Petersburg, Florida. Ruth could hit a golf ball nearly as well as a baseball, and he was known to achieve 300-plus yard drives in the days of “primitive” golf technology—using wooden clubs with hickory shafts. Despite his poor putting, Ruth could shoot in the 70s. When he retired, Ruth sometimes played in exhibitions with celebrities and top golfers of the day, including female athletic phenom Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Beautifully double-cloth matted and framed with a high-quality laser print of the front and back covers of the card, a photo of Ruth on the golf course, and a photo of Ruth at Yankee Stadium to an overall size of 22.5 x 30.25. Provenance: the Barry Halper Collection. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA. In fine condition, with diagonal crease to both sides and a light vertical crease beneath signature. Auction LOA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
