Description

MANGIA!: ROSSINI sends New Year’s greetings and Italian delicacies to his lawyer

ALS in Italian signed “G. Rossini,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, February 7, 1851. Rossini writes from Bologna to his lawyer, Filippo Santocanale, in Palermo. In part: “I was in debit to write you a letter at the beginning of the New Year to you, your wife and your beloved little Napoleon to send you the best possible wishes for much happiness. Furthermore, I knew I had to write to announce a little shipment; to be discreet (and not from lack of affection) I believed it right not to give you the pain of reading from me and stealing so much time from your many occupations, so please excuse me. The shipment of which I spoke above consists of a basket containing 4 zamponi [cooked pig legs, an Italian delicacy], 2 mortadella and some salami, and flowers from our garden in Bologna, which I beg you to accept with the typical goodness you have always bestowed upon me; naturally, all this is free of any expense on your part. I am not speaking of business as not to cause you displeasure; I know your heart too well. I will only tell you that I am very sorry to be losing my hopes of doing business with you....” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Rossini’s hand. The items are matted together with a portrait to an overall size of 21.25 x 16. Intersecting folds and a hint of mild wrinkling and toning, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
