Description

Asking a favor of his publisher in the year of his second marriage

Important Italian composer (1792–1868) who became one of the seminal figures in the history of opera with such repertoire staples as the Barber of Seville and William Tell. ALS in Italian, signed “Rossini,” one page, 7.5 x 8.25, May 2, 1846. Rossini writes from Bologna to his friend and publisher, Giovanni Recordi, in Milan, explaining that a pupil of the tenor Bordogni (who debuted in the composer’s Tancredi in 1813) would be in Milan with her mother in the following week and inquiring, given Ricordi’s familiarity with the city, if he would assist in finding an inexpensive room in a private house for this “charming person.” The reverse bears the address panel in Rossini’s hand. Matted with a CDV photo (so that both sides of the letter are visible) to an overall size of 13 x 17.5. Intersecting folds (vertical fold to signature), mild soiling with a few faint stains, and light handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
