Description

After several important Allied victories, FDR writes “Things certainly look happier this week than for some time past.”

TLS as president signed “F. D. R.,” one page, 7 x 9, November 19, 1942. Brief letter to his friend, Gertrude Ely. In full: “Ever so many thanks for your wire. Things certainly look happier this week than for some time past.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. The wire mentioned by Roosevelt was after his address to the closing session of the New York Herald Tribune Forum given two days earlier, where he stated “During the last two weeks we have had a great deal of good news and it would seem the turning point of this war has occurred.” This was due to several major allied victories in Africa, Guadalcanal; and the beginning of the encircling movement at Stalingrad on the Eastern Front. In fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
