Description

A LITTLE CLOSER TO HEAVEN: Scarce flown and astronaut-certified Bible text fragment, handsomely presented in a customized Fabergé egg

Original segment of a microfilmed King James Bible carried to the lunar surface in the “PPK” bag of Lunar Module Pilot Ed Mitchell during the Apollo 14 mission (and also having been carried aboard the near-disastrous Apollo 13 mission), comprising fifty pages which can easily be read under high magnification. The item, originally produced by Reverend John M. Stout of the Apollo Prayer League, who worked closely with the astronauts and NASA personnel, represents the first (and still only) Bible ever carried to the lunar surface. The microfilmed section is handsomely presented in a customized Fabergé egg. Accompanied by a June 2, 2001, certificate of authenticity signed by Mitchell, dated June 2, 2001, detailing the history and provenance of the fragment. In part: “I received 300 copies of the previously flown Apollo 13 Bibles.... Of those, 100 copies would accompany me to the Moon’s surface.... The 100 Lunar Surface Bibles were stowed in my ‘PPK’ Bag aboard our Lunar Module Antares. On February 5, 1971, they made their historic landfall with Alan Shepard and me on the Moon at Fra Mauro, where they remained for 34 hours.... After the flight, some of the Lunar Surface Bibles were cut up into 50-page Text-Fragments.... Of these, this Fragment is one of only 32 examples to date that have been located, encased within customized Fabergé eggs, and officially flight certified by me.... This copy thus remains one of only 32 Astronaut Flight-Certified Lunar Bible Text-Fragments in existence.” Also included is a page of composite photos of the Bible, the Antares, and Mitchell and Stout posing with a text fragment. In very fine condition. A highly unusual double-flown souvenir! COA Scott Cornish and R&R COA.
