Color 10 x 8 NASA photo of the Apollo 11 crew, signed in black felt tip “Neil Armstrong” and in blue felt tip “M. Collins” and “Buzz Aldrin.” Included with the item is the cardboard backing from the frame in which the photo was originally contained, bearing a handwritten note from Mamie S. Hall, a longtime NASA employee who was then in the Personnel Division: “Original signatures 11-6-69, returned from world tour on presidential plane at Ellington Air Force Base, Texas. I went on board with them, picked up presidential phone and sat in his chair on the plane.” Accompanied by a TLS to Hall on NASA letterhead, signed “D. K. Slayton” and dated August 21, 1967. In part: “Your outstanding efforts in support of the selection board and candidates during the recent scientist-astronaut selection were greatly appreciated. We were able to efficiently process the 68 candidates through MSC in record time, largely due to your dedicated help and support.... On behalf of the Board, I would like to commend you for an outstanding job....” Slayton letter toned, and a few subtle surface marks and spots of faint soiling, to photo, otherwise fine condition.
