George IV (1762–1830) was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1820 to his death. The eldest son of George III, he alienated his subjects with his prodigious spending and contemptuous treatment of his wife Queen Caroline, whom he refused to admit to his coronation. Robert Peel (1788-1850) served as British Prime Minister during two separate periods in the 1830s and 1840s. As Home Secretary he was instrumental in the institution of a modern police force, giving rise to the nickname “Bobbies” for British constables. Manuscript DS, signed “George R. and Rob. A document commuting the remainder of the prison sentence of William Ingledew, convicted of felony and “sentenced to be imprisoned and kept to hard labor … for the term of twelve calendar months, and to be one privately whipped.” Light intersecting folds, and mild soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition.
