Franking signature, “Free, M. Fillmore,” on a 5.5 x 3 mailing envelope addressed in his hand to Miss D[orothea] L. Dix in Trenton, New Jersey and bearing an 1859 Buffalo postmark and “FREE” ink stamp. The original recipient (1802–1887) was a prominent social reformer who championed the rights of the insane and served as Superintendent of Army Nurses during the Civil War. Fillmore and Dix were close allies and frequent correspondents; a number of their letters are collected in the 1975 book The Lady and the President: The Letters of Dorothea Dix and Millard Fillmore.
