American statesman and politician (circa 1755–1804) who coauthored the Federalist Papers and served as the first Secretary of the Treasury. In July 1804, sitting vice president Aaron Burr, stung by a published criticism authored by Hamilton, challenged the esteemed statesman to a duel and fatally wounded him. Franking signature, “Free, A. Hamilton,” on a 5.75 x 3.25 (panel size) postal cover addressed in another hand to Joseph Hiller, Collector of Customs in Salem, Massachusetts, and bearing the notation “Treasury Department” and a “FREE” ink stamp. A docket on a flap bears the date August 29, 1792. In very good condition, with two vertical creases with associated staining (one through signature; tiny holes elsewhere), mild soiling, ink erosion hole to one letter of addressee’s name, and signature a shade light but fully legible.
