Description

Sending holiday greetings

British author and illustrator (1866–1943) whose Edwardian-era tales of naughty rabbits, “bad” mice, and other amusingly mischievous animals take a place among the most enduring and beloved works in the annals of children’s literature. Her first and best-known book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, has sold more than 40 million copies since it was first published in 1902. Printed greeting card featuring a color illustration of one of Potter’s rabbits and a bird on the front panel, the interior with an image of three rabbits and a caption beginning “Here comes Peter with the Post-bag!,” 4.25 x 6, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “[From] ‘Beatrix Potter’ [To] Ina with love, Dec. 22 39.” Following her marriage to solicitor William Heelis in 1913, Potter consistently used her married name on documents and in correspondence; autograph material signed as “Beatrix Potter,” particularly from this period of her life, is of great scarcity. In very good condition, with scattered soiling, staining (heaviest along the fold), and toning, and a few small, subtle creases. The writing is clear and generally unaffected. Highly unusual and desirable, particularly as Potter most often signed using her married name! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
