Description

Partly printed DS as president, one page, 15.25 x 9.5, March 24, 1858. An appointment for William Wertenbaker as postmaster at the University of Virginia. Wertenbaker, a classmate of Edgar Allan Poe’s at the University at Virginia, published a memoir dispelling a number of myths about the writer’s year at the university, observing, "I often saw him in the Lecture room and in the library, but never in the slightest degree under the influence of intoxicating liquors. Among the Professors he had the reputation of being a sober, quiet and orderly young man.” Countersigned by Lewis Cass as secretary of state. The embossed paper seal remains intact at lower left. Matted and framed to an overall size of 21.75 x 15.75. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (small holes and separations, one through “C” of “Cass”), scattered mild wrinkling, and a hint of faint soiling. The signature is dark and clear. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
