“THE FINEST THING THAT WOULD HAPPEN IN THE WORLD”: BARRIE writes to a future Nobel laureate on Anglo-American relations

Scottish author and dramatist (1860–1937) best known for the classic children’s play Peter Pan. ALS, one page both sides, 5.25 x 7, January 23, 1919. Barrie writes to Nicholas Murray Brown (1862–1947), President of Columbia University, head of the Carnegie Endownment for International Peace, and co-winner of the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize. In full: “In answer to your cable I enclose a message for the performance on the 20th. It would be better understood by [the] audience if read at end of play than earlier. Please let me take this opportunity of thanking you for your invitation to America. I should very much have like to be able to accept it, but had to decline because some matters tie me down here. I think in time friendship between America and this country would be the finest thing that would happen in the world….” Accompanied by a carbon of Butler’s reply, bearing a stamped signature. Secretarial ink stamps and notations, and a touch of mild soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
