Description

Partly printed DS as president, one page on vellum, 15.75 x 19.5, February 6, 1858. A commission for James A. Hardie as captain in the Third Regiment of Artillery. Hardie (1823–1876), who rose to the rank of general, served on McClellan’s staff during the Peninsular and Maryland campaigns, and on Burnside’s staff in the battles around Fredericksburg. He was later assigned to special duty in the War Department, and was assistant secretary under Edwin M. Stanton. Countersigned by John B. Floyd as secretary of war. The embossed paper seal remains intact at lower left. Intersecting folds (small holes along folds and at intersections with archival reinforcement to reverse), mild scattered soiling, and a few marginal creases, otherwise fine condition.
