“I DID NOT TRY TO HURT TOTO”: HAMILTON analyzes her dual Wizard of Oz roles in depth

American character actress (1902–1985) who earned everlasting fame for her role as the Wicked Witch of the West in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz Glossy 8 x 10 photo, signed and inscribed in black felt tip, “My love and my best wishes to N—, & thank you for that nice letter, Margaret Hamilton.” Hamilton has added an ALS on the reverse, which she signs in full a second time. In part: “I think your friend or ‘that man’ telling a story—was teasing! ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is a book—one of many books about ‘Oz’—by Frank L. Baum [sic]—and it was written in 1902 (the year I was born!) and Mr. Baum is the one who made up that name. All the many books are called ‘The Oz Books.’ I did not try to hurt ‘Toto’—honey—I played a part called Miss Gulch—and it was Miss Gulch who was so cross & mean. No matter who played Miss Gulch—she would be played that way—cross and mean—a little like a witch—don’t you think? The witch didn’t try to hurt the lion! Only the scarecrow! But she (the witch) never managed to do any of the things she wanted to do! Neither did Miss Gulch—the dog Toto—got away—remember? I hope you are all over being scared. That’s why I am sending you a real picture of me—besides the witch! So many things look & seem one way—and are not really that way. I expect if we could really know Miss Gulch she wouldn’t be so nasty—and we’d find out why she was so upset over Toto. She tho’t he tried to bite her! We think Toto wouldn’t bite anyone—but Toto did bark & maybe scared Miss Gulch! There are lots of things to think about, N—! Love to you dear….” A few dings and surface marks to images, and tiny corner creases, otherwise fine condition. A unique document of one of the most beloved screen “villains” of all time! R&R COA.
