Two months before the American entry into World War I: “So much of importance pending and such grave questions likely to be presented at any time”

TLS signed “W. G. Harding,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Senate letterhead, February 5, 1917. Harding writes to Mrs. J. B. Williams in New York City. In part: “I cannot even guess at this time when I shall be in New York City. There is so much of importance pending and such grave questions likely to be presented at any time that I have made my plans to be available to a Senate roll call at any time. Meanwhile, if your son has been satisfied as to the actual test of the new motor and is desirous of presenting the matter to some of the larger automobile manufacturers, I shall be glad to serve him in any way possible. I do hope all your expectations will be realized in the development of this motor….” Congress declared war on Germany two months later, on April 6. Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to “W”; pinholes at intersections; a few short edge separations) and a hint of subtle soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition.
