Description

ARCHISEXTURE: WRIGHT writes a check to a reputed Taliesin “mistress”

Highly influential American architect (1867–1959) whose mastery of space, form, and human-centered design revolutionized the field of architecture and earned him a place among the greatest thinkers and artists of the twentieth century. Wright-designed business check for the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, 8.25 x 3.25, filled out in type and signed by Wright, payable to Kay Davison for $30.00, August 1, 1947. According to the controversial 2006 biography The Fellowship: The Untold Story of Frank Lloyd Wright & the Taliesin Fellowship, “More than a few women [at Taliesin] felt ‘forced’ by Olgivanna [Wright’s wife] to have a relationship with the male apprentices, and some dove into the project enthusiastically. One married woman—Kay Davison, a mother of two—was well-known for rotating through the ranks at her mistress’s behest. ‘I had them all,’ she once boasted.” Light tape stain to top edge and slight blot to last letter of signature, and faint vertical fold to first name, otherwise fine condition. A most unusual association! R&R COA.
