Description

CULTURE IN CAMELOT: JFK appoints a member of the committee to create what became the Kennedy Center

Outstanding partly engraved DS as president, boldly signed “John F. Kennedy,” one page, 22.5 x 18.75, November 14, 1961. An appointment for Samuel Rosenbaum as a member of the Advisory Committee on the Arts (National Cultural Center). Samuel Rosenbaum was a leading Philadelphia attorney who served as a trustee of the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 1958 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Cultural Center Act, which included four basic components: it authorized the Center’s construction, spelled out an artistic mandate to present a wide variety of both classical and contemporary performances, specified an educational mission for the Center, and stated that the Center was to be an independent facility, self-sustaining and privately funded. Following Kennedy’s death, President Lyndon B. Johnson asked Congress to name the National Cultural Center for Kennedy and signed a bill authorizing federal participation in the construction of the facility. The Kennedy Center was officially opened on September 8, 1971 with the world premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. Countersigned by Dean Rusk as secretary of state. The embossed paper seal remains intact at lower left. The very slightest suggestion of toning to extreme edges, otherwise very fine, clean condition. Scarce and splendid for display! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
