American composer and pianist (1898–1937) who was one of the first musicians to attain resounding international success in both the popular and “serious” spheres. While he occupies a secure place among the most gifted songwriters in the history of music, his output extended far beyond the Broadway stage to include concerti and other large-scale concert works, chamber and instrumental music, and the landmark opera Porgy and Bess.
